When I was a little kid I used to sneak into my grandmother’s bedroom while I was meant to be napping and try on all of her costume jewelry and pretend like I was a hostess at a holiday party! I think even though you think you don’t enjoy a sequin, there just might be an inner holiday hostess hiding inside yourself waiting to come out. The Mother Is Often Gone The mother has started wearing the grandmother’s old clothes. See, she was the same height as me, but much wider, she’ll say to the daughter, bunching the back of a plaid wool jacket, or maybe a mink coat. She wears the grandmother’s blazers with shoulder pads and gold-braid detail to work, and has even gotten into the costume jewelry, like coral necklaces or rings with big, black stones. The mother and the grandmother had the same shoe size, too, so in the winter the mother goes around in some white fur boots with brass toes. In the springtime she starts appearing in some dirty cork sandals. The mother and daughter will be in a car, riding to a outlet mall for new jeans, or sitting across from each other over warm turkey sandwiches when a cartain type of talk will start. The mother talks bad about the grandmother as she plays the straw in her drink and the daughter sits up straight.

Sometimes boutique’s change their designers, their content – even the color of their walls. But they rarely change names – unless they have new owners, new management. One of our favorite small eclectic l.A. stores, Vionnet at 158 N. Robertson (near Beverly Blvd), is changing it’s name – to Les Pommettes. Les Pommettes means “the cheekbones” in French – and it has the same owner, Delia Seaman, and the same great jewelry she designs under the Decolette labels, and great tops, dresses, scarves – it’s very Parisian. Only Les Pommettes will not sell anything with leather, fur, suede or feathers, as Delia is a strict vegetarian. They don’t sell handbags or shoes, but bye-bye belts and leather cuffs. Anyway, check out their new website, Topearl , and their phone is 310-289-9202. It’s still the best place in town for costume jewelry.

After enjoying a skiing vacation in the Colorado mountains, Epple was waiting in the drop-off lane at the airport on his way back to his Minneapolis home. He noticed a ring shining in the bright sunlight, with a yellow stone so big that Mark thought it must be a child’s costume jewelry. Once home, Mark inspected the ring more closely and realized that the stone was a genuine 12-carat diamond. The ring was actually given to Janice Ward by her husband, Roger, on the occasion of their 30th anniversary. She had taken it off in the car on her way to airport, placing it on her lap, and it later fell when she stepped out. There was a heavy snowstorm the following morning, and the strenuous search by the county’s curbside staff and American Airline employees went in vain.

Pam Will describes the fundraisers, held three or four times a year, as “huge garage sales.” They take place in a warehouse at Connecto Electric, the business Pam and her husband, Jeff, own at 3716 McClelland Ave., just off the Bayfront Connector. Pam and a core of 20 volunteers have transformed a 45-by-60-foot area of the bright, airy warehouse into an inviting boutique. “We use everything we can. Nothing goes to waste,” says Lil Laskowski, who is in charge of refurbishing the costume jewelry, displayed on wood shutters that Pam found discarded on a roadside. The volunteers originally met at House of Healing, which served women recovering from addictions.
