Review: Beaded Bungee Bookmarks & Giveaway
I am so excited to share with you some super cute bookmarks from Twin Cottage Industries I recently received two samples in the mail for review, and I cannot tell you how adorable both of them are. In fact, I can’t decide which one I love the most. These Beaded Bungee Bookmarks are incredibly unique and a fantastic idea for readers on-the-go! The bookmarks are made with a thin piece of elastic that wraps around a book to keep your place. In addition, they are embellished with all sorts of cute beads and charms. The best thing about the Beaded Bungee Bookmarks is that the elastic is adjustable! You can adjust the elastic to fit any sized book without damaging the pages. Check out this video about how the Beaded Bungee Bookmarks work: I was fortunate enough to receive a Paper Bead and Affirmation Charm bookmark -.

Bead & Button Update
I have been working away and I’m on schedule and I’ve slept 8 hours for the last three nights! (That’s a miracle!) Today will be my last day of clay work and then we’ll be painting, sanding and tagging things for 2 days. I stopped counting when I reached 700 focal bead, pendants, connectors and clasps. That doesn’t include disk beads or charms. I think I may have enough! Funny though, the pile doesn’t look like 700 beads. But I will have a full table. I CAN NOT WAIT TO GO!!! I have sketched out a new plan for my booth and it involves needing 3 of these : Which led me to list 8 of my new cuff beads on Etsy to pay for said displays! So if you were lusting and thought you’d have to wait until mid-June to get your mitts on one .

How to Decorate Wooden Beads Tutorials
Tweet Wooden beads are light weight and easy to customize. They can be dyed, painted or covered over with fabric. Over on Edie’s Fashion Factory blog is a fun dyed wooden bead necklace tutorial by Kristal Wick. Rit Dyes were used for the triple stranded focal. One more clever idea by Kristal is the use of additional clasps in the front so the wearer can choose to wear the necklace with 1, 2 or 3 strands!! Vanessa Christenson’s Lime Green Necklace tutorial shows us how easy it is to paint wooden beads. Check it out and see her tips on how to mount the beads for the painting process. Jojo over at Cut Out and Keep has a clever painted wood beads tutorial She didn’t just paint it but she also chiseled out designs on the beads themselves. Carolyn Hasenfratz’s Decoupage Wooden Beads tutorial is just wonderful as the square and round beads are rubber stamped and have small pieces of paper applied. A good project for those who love crafts.

I’m living in the jungle. At least that’s what it feels like at night here in beautiful Iowa City. The hot, steamy air sings, alive with insects and birds. I look around and think yes, this looks like a quiet, tree-lined street somewhere in America’s heartland, but it feels like the Amazon. Even so, each night I go sit on the patio and soak in the warmth and watch my boys catch and release fireflies. Although the move was a pain in the you-know-what, I am so happy to be here! My cute friend Vanessa from V and Co. is on her way here right now. That’s right–she’s moving to Iowa, too, just 20 minutes up the road! She’ll be here this week to experience the Amazon along with me, and hopefully we’ll have a few field trips to quilt shops and antique stores in the area (yeah!). She also volunteered (in the middle of her move!) to guest post for our birthday bash. I just love this girl! If you don’t know her already, go check out her blog and her shop.

Create Your Own Vintaj Custom Metal Discs & Bead Caps
Lorelei Eurto’s Designs ROCK! I love her beading style, she always incorporates unique art beads with natural elements and has recently been handcrafting her own Vintaj metal discs & bead caps to add to her designs. These are super cool organic jewelry components that complement her style. Check out these awesome earrings created by Lorelei, she used a metal disc cutter to punch the brass discs from one of our Altered Blank Canvases , and then added texture with hammers…

Unconventional Ways with Bead Caps
Tweet One excellent way to increase the design possibilities is to find new uses for findings. Take Ornamentea’s Flared Bead Cap earrings video tutorial for example. It uses large bead caps like chandelier findings. Chains hang from the ends of the bead caps forming a very unusual and clever earring design. The tools and materials listing are here You do need a metal hole punch to create the extra holes at the ends of the flared sections. Another approach is to combine bead caps with different findings. Shown here is a pendant I made for my friend Debbie where I wired a bead cap and a metal wreath together and embellished with pretty pink crystals. Inspired? Have fun playing with your beads! Great Tucson Finds at the Whole Bead Show
I had to scoop up a few of the goodies I found at this show. One of my new exciting finds was a handheld riveting tool at The Beadin’ Path ( http://Topearl/beads. html ). Make an Anthropologie-Inspired Bead and Chain Necklace
When it comes to things I need to destash, costume jewelry is pretty high on the list. I’ve been given a large quantity of it over the years, and I also keep an eye out for it at yard sales and estate sales. I went surfing around the Anthropologie website looking for inspiration because their styles lend themselves well to reusing old jewelry bits. One of the first things that caught my eye was their Oscillating Orbs necklace Here’s the original: At $38.00 it’s actually not too terribly steep compared to most Anthro items, but I’d still rather make my own. Even if I wasn’t stashbusting and I went out and bought special beads and chain to use for the project, I could make it for well less than half of that! Here is the knockoff I came up with: Not bad, huh? Project estimate:

Make an Anthropologie-Inspired Bead and Chain Necklace
I dug through my costume jewelry and found this great chain with square links that would give a similar effect to the chain in the Anthro necklace. The beads I used were salvaged from an old necklace that just wasn’t my style. Start by cutting a length of fishing line or beading wire (I used fishing line because I had it on hand) and use crimp beads to attach a jump ring at one end. String the chain onto the fishing line through the first chain link, then add a bead. Wrap the chain around the bead and string the fishing line through the next possible chain link. Add another bead, then wrap the chain around it, forming an S-shape with the chain. Keep adding beads and weaving the chain back and forth around them until you reach the end of the chain. If needed, remove any extra chain links, then finish the end with another jump ring and more crimp beads. Attach additional lengths of chain at the ends using the jump rings if needed, then add a closure.

Skull and cupcake necklace using “Chaos” Wire wrapping from the cool new book: Chain and Bead Jewelry Creative Connectio
Ihad posted a while back that I had some cool skull and cupcake buttons from Cathi Milligan’s BeadsBrains and I was saving them for a “special project”. Well, here it is. When I saw the “chaos” wire wrapping technique in Chain and Bead Jewelry Creative Connections I knew just what my first project was going to be. This technique really worked well to feature the pretty little shank style buttons. The book is packed full of more formal link style projects that I will most certainly be trying in the new year! And if learning how to make all sorts of chain jewelry is on your “to-do” list you will love this book. Chain and Bead Jewelry Creative Connections: New Techniques for Wire-Wrapping and Bead-Setting By Scott David Plumlee Far from its original utilitarian useto create armorthe chain-mail technique has been adapted over time to create beautiful, unique jewelry.

Book Review: Chain and Bead Jewelry Geometric Connections
Chain and Bead Jewelry Geometric Connections: A New Angle on Creating Dimensional Earrings, Bracelets, and Necklaces by Scott David Plumlee* Ah, the simple jump ring…the most basic of jewelry supplies. But from such a simple and basic foundation, an amazing variety of complex and beautiful jewelry items can be constructed. This book celebrates the jump ring by showing many uses for it, showing seemingly endless possibilities with very clear description and instruction. From the very basics of working with wire and metal to make your own jump rings, earwires, and wire wrapped beads to how to work with rings to make the most intricate jewelry designs, this book has it all! Plumlee explores some basic chain patterns like the classic Byzantine design, and shows how it can be altered into different variations to create contemporary jewelry. The addition of mixed metals and brightly colored stone beads makes the chain designs very modern and wearable.
